Who is a digital nomad?

Whether you are a web developer, translator, copywriter, teacher or a coach, you might be able to work from anywhere, the key is to have a strong internet connection or mobile internet.

Nowadays, there are so many different ways to work without being tied to a specific location. Dozens of jobs can be done online, from a laptop or even from your phone. And why could this be beneficial for you?

Being a digital nomad can give you endless freedom, varied experiences and a life filled with full of travel and adventures!

As a digital nomad, you can work anywhere. You can work online from a home office, from the beach or from a snowy mountain top. Whether you’re self-employed, freelancer or employed, if your job allows it, it’s now easy to work as a digital nomad.

The backpacker lifestyle

Today’s people are no longer looking for corporate loyalty, they change jobs more often and more easily than previous generations. We are living in an era of project-based working, and this trend still seems to be growing.

During Covid, many workers were forced to home offices, but the emergency has made workers and employers alike aware of its potentials. Experience has shown that working from home is highly efficient, and that the freedom to work from home does not reduce its speed, but increases it, rather dramatically.

Getting work done

Time and place matters less, tasks simply need to be done. The labour market has become global, people work together in international environments. Connecting with someone on the other side of the world has never been quicker or easier.

Digital nomad villages around the world

Portugal

The Digital Nomads Madeira initiative started in Portugal in February 2021. The brainstorming team consisted of the island’s leaders, a local startup, and Gonçalo Hall. The municipality of Ponta do Sol has become the world’s first digital village specifically for remote workers.

Through conscious work and joint events, they are building relationships between the locals and the digital nomads. Local businesses are also involved in the project, helping to raise the quality of life there.

Brazil

Based on the portuguese model, Brazil started to offer home to digital nomads in the province of Rio do Norte, Pipa. The village is ideally located, as it is an hour and a half drive from an international airport, has a beautiful beach and a high nightlife culture.

Gonçalo Hall, who started the digital nomad village in Portugal and has also created the NomadX community, talked with the local tourism officials and the Brazilian government about his plans.

High-quality, dormitory-style accommodation is available for digital nomad travellers in Pipa, with communal spaces and coworking areas. A strong internet connection is provided.

Slow Travel

Digital Nomads prefer slow forms of travel that allow for deep absorption. They spend weeks or even months in a place, getting to know the local culture and experiencing everyday life in a foreign country. They shop at farmers’ markets, go on excursions and get to know their neighbours. Their aim is not to gain as many experiences as possible in a short time, but rather to gain depth and substance.
