Some people choose the railways instead of the German property market.
Living on €10,000 a year, a young computer scientist, Lasse Stolley, decided at the age of 17 to live on a train. He started travelling in the summer of 2022, after graduating from high school, and is enjoying the freedom of hiking in the Alps or swimming in the Baltic Sea. The majority of his annual expenses (more than half) go towards a first class BahnCard 100 pass. He found it hard to sleep at first, but now he’s used to the lifestyle and misses the rocking of the train even on nights at his parents’. By the way, night trains like Nightjet have become popular in recent years, so it’s worth trying sleeping on the train.
Do you think you could live like that?
