Is Gender Classification Coming to an End? – How Does Equality Work Without Gender Categories?
More and more countries are abolishing gender-based legal classifications, removing the “male” and “female” categories from official documents. The idea is simple: everyone is equal, and gender identity is a personal matter. But what does this mean in everyday life?
Norway, for instance, has allowed individuals to change their legal gender without medical intervention since 2016. Denmark introduced a simplified process in 2014, with a six-month reflection period. Malta and Argentina have gone even further, allowing individuals to define their legal gender without court approval or medical certification.
These measures aim to strengthen equality. However, many wonder how practical such a system is in reality. Will it simplify or complicate administrative processes? How will it impact social norms, workplaces, or family law issues?
