Did You Know There Are Countries Where Tipping Is Considered an Insult?

If you’re used to leaving a tip at restaurants, in taxis, or at hotels for good service, you might be surprised to learn that in some places, not only is tipping not expected, but it can actually be seen as offensive.

Take Japan, for example. For waiters, taxi drivers, and other service providers, excellent service isn’t considered an extra effort—it’s simply part of the job. Offering a tip may be interpreted as saying, “You don’t earn enough; here’s a little extra.” Similar attitudes can be found in South Korea and China, where tipping is not part of the culture and may even be considered disrespectful in certain situations.

On the flip side, in the United States, many hospitality workers rely on tips as a major part of their income, as their base wages are typically low. Here, leaving a 15–20% tip is the norm, and failing to tip can be seen as rude or disrespectful.

In Europe, tipping customs vary by country. In France, Italy, and Switzerland, service charges are usually included in the bill. While leaving some extra change is appreciated, it’s not expected. However, in Spain, Germany, and Hungary, leaving additional tips is more common.

💬 Have you ever visited a place where tipping wasn’t expected—or where your tip was actually refused? What’s your take: should you tip or not? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇
