Two of the World’s Best Trails Are in New England, According to New Ranking

Massachusetts, home to a diverse array of trails from urban walks to natural strolls, has received recent recognition from the outdoor discovery platform AllTrails. Two New England routes, including one based in Boston, have been named among the top 25 trails to explore globally in 2025. This highlights the varied quality of the region’s pathways, with a notable inclusion being the urban-focused Freedom Trail in Boston.

Boston’s iconic Freedom Trail is ranked at No. 3 on AllTrails‘ 2025 list, joining esteemed international trails such as Italy’s Il Sentiero della Pace, Mexico’s Cerro Pelón, New Zealand’s Hump Ridge Track, and Japan’s Nachi Falls. This 2.5-mile (approximately 4 km) trail is easily identified by a distinctive brick-red “line” on the sidewalk, winding through the heart of Boston and passing significant historical sites like Paul Revere’s house and the Old South Meeting House. AllTrails notes that while it may not offer abundant trees and wildlife, it provides a wealth of historical monuments and a convenient free audio tour from the National Park Service.

Adding to New England’s commendation, New Hampshire’s stunning Appalachian Trail secured the No. 8 spot, dubbed “one of the most treasured thru-hikes in the world” by AllTrails. Spanning over 2,000 miles (ca. 3,219 km) (approximately 3200 km) along the eastern United States, this trail has welcomed countless adventurers, including trailblazers like Grandma Gatewood and Bill Irwin. AllTrails emphasizes that its magic can be experienced without being a “hardcore backpacker”. Other highly-ranked American trails in the top 10 include Utah’s Dark Sky Reserve, Arkansas’s Slaughter Pen Trail, and the Firefly Trail in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.
