Parents in Budapest Get a Monthly Free Night Out: Kindergartens Offer Overnight Stays
The local government of Terézváros (Budapest’s 6th district) is now offering free, monthly overnight stays at kindergartens to ease the burden on parents. The initiative aims to provide parents with at least one free evening a month to spend together, while giving children a unique and exciting experience. The concept was inspired by the successful “Moon Den” (Hold Kuckó) program that has been running in Szolnok for years.
The first overnight event took place on Friday, September 26, at the Mesevilág, Játékvár, and Fasori Kicsinyek Kindergartens. Parents could drop their children off at 6 PM and pick them up the next morning at 8:30 AM.
Zsuzsanna Jámbor, the head of the Mesevilág Kindergarten, explained that the educators prepared themed activities for the occasion. The first night, celebrating Car-Free Day, involved children practicing safe traffic on a mock road course, creating paper models, and a special treasure hunt. Armed with flashlights, the kids explored the halls and rooms to find glow-in-the-dark rewards.
The main goal of the “Moon Den” program is clear: to relieve parental stress. This gives parents the chance to go to the theatre, enjoy dinner, or simply relax as a couple without having to pay for a babysitter. For the children, the overnight stay is a fun adventure that also prepares them for later summer camps and helps them get used to spending nights away from home. Terézváros is actively supporting families with this unique program.
