Mauritius’ Hidden Gem: The Seven Coloured Earths

Mauritius, the idyllic island in the Indian Ocean, is renowned for its stunning beaches and turquoise lagoons. However, it also harbors a truly unique natural wonder in the Chamarel plains: the Seven Coloured Earths. This relatively small area consists of undulating dunes displaying an almost complete spectrum of the rainbow – from reds and browns to purples.

Geologists believe this rare phenomenon is due to the unique composition of the volcanic rocks and the weathering processes. The various minerals react differently to moisture and temperature, creating this breathtaking array of colours. Interestingly, if you mix the differently coloured sands together, they will eventually settle back into separate layers.

The Seven Coloured Earths are not just a visual spectacle but also a geological curiosity, attracting thousands of tourists to Mauritius each year who come to witness this natural work of art with their own eyes.
