E-tattoos: The future revolutionising workplace safety
Electronic tattoos, or e-tattoos, could be the next big breakthrough in workplace safety and mental well-being. Researchers have developed a groundbreaking e-tattoo that adheres to the face and can monitor the wearer’s mental state in real-time, detecting overload, underload, and even anticipating mental exhaustion. Initially, this technology could offer revolutionary assistance in high-risk professions such as truck drivers and air traffic controllers.
Developed at the University of Texas, this e-tattoo decodes brainwaves to measure mental workload. Its aim is to help workers maintain an optimal level of engagement, avoiding both excessive and insufficient mental strain, which can equally lead to errors. The system signals when a worker needs a break, thereby preventing accidents or mistakes caused by fatigue.
Initial tests involving six participants have been highly promising. The e-tattoo not only revealed changes in cognitive demand, but also successfully predicted mental exhaustion. Although sweating might pose challenges for stable adhesion, researchers are now looking to test the device in real-world conditions.
One of the e-tattoo’s most significant advantages is its cost-effectiveness. While a traditional EEG examination can cost thousands of dollars, the components of the e-tattoo are remarkably inexpensive. According to Dr. Luis Sentis, the study’s author, this low price makes the technology truly accessible, and his goal is for the e-tattoo to become a product that can be worn at home.
Jihoon Lim, a researcher at the University of Melbourne, emphasised the e-tattoo’s objective, real-time data provision compared to subjective self-reporting. He added that its ease of use encourages regular wear, even during prolonged occupational activities. This technology could fundamentally transform how organisations care for the overall well-being of their workforce.
