What is a Working Holiday Visa, and Who is It For?

A Working Holiday Visa allows young people aged 18 to 35 to legally work and travel in a specific country for 6 to 12 months. Hungarian youth can apply for a limited number of spots in the Taiwanese program, which permits one year of legal work and travel.

How to Apply for the Taiwan Working Holiday Program

We’ve put together a helpful guide to ensure your visa application for the Republic of China (Taiwan) is successful.

Before applying, make sure you meet the following requirements:

• You are a citizen of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada (age limit typically up to 35), Czech Republic (age limit can be up to 26), France, Germany, Hungary (age limit typically up to 35) Ireland, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg (age limit typically up to 35), Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia (age limit typically up to 35), United Kingdom
• You have not previously participated in Taiwan’s Working Holiday Program.
• You are between 18 and 35 years old on the day of application.
• You are not accompanied by a spouse or dependents unless they also hold a Working Holiday Visa.

For a successful application, you’ll need the following documents and funds:

• An online completed and signed visa application form.
• A passport valid for at least 12 months after entering Taiwan.
• Two passport-sized photos taken within the last 6 months.
• Proof of educational qualifications.
• Proof of comprehensive insurance coverage for the duration of your stay.
• A police clearance certificate.
• Bank statements proving sufficient financial means. You must demonstrate at least €4,000 in funds, or €2,500 along with a return air ticket.
• A non-refundable application fee of €74.

It’s always recommended to check the official website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan) (BOCA) or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in your specific country for the most up-to-date and detailed information regarding eligibility, requirements, and application procedures.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted in person at the Taipei Representative Office in your country. The processing time is typically 1–2 weeks. Additional documents or an interview may be requested if needed.

Visa Type and Validity

You will receive a Visitor Visa valid for one year from the date of issue, allowing for multiple entries. The initial stay period is 180 days, which can be extended once for an additional 180 days. The extension request must be submitted at least 15 days before the current stay expires at a local office of the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan. However, the total duration of stay from the date of entry cannot exceed one year. Further extensions or changes to the visa type are not permitted.

Important Conditions

It’s crucial to note that within this program, you can only undertake temporary work and cannot work for the same employer for more than three months. Participants cannot enrol in official courses, except for Chinese language courses not exceeding three months during their stay.

Make your departure and arrival as smooth as possible with these simple steps.

Before you go, it’s essential to prepare in advance! Double-check the validity of your documents – such as your passport and visa – and the program requirements. It’s wise to review everything multiple times to avoid pre-departure stress. If possible, start learning some basic Chinese phrases. While many people speak English, knowing the local language can significantly help with daily life and connecting with locals.

Upon arrival, open a local bank account as soon as possible. This will greatly simplify managing your finances, including your salary. Equally important is to learn about the local culture and customs. Taiwanese people appreciate it when you respect their values and traditions – this will help you integrate more easily.

The Working Holiday rules allow you to try different types of work. Since you can’t stay with the same employer for too long, take advantage of the opportunity to gain diverse experiences!
