China: Artificial Intelligence to Become a Mandatory School Subject
Beijing’s pioneering step in preparing the next generation
China is taking a significant stride towards solidifying its technological leadership by making Artificial Intelligence (AI) education mandatory in all primary and secondary schools nationwide, starting from September 1, 2025. This strategic decision introduces the fundamentals of AI even to children as young as six, with a minimum of eight hours of dedicated instruction annually.
The authorities in Beijing aim to equip students from a young age with the skills needed for an AI-driven world. The curriculum will not only cover theoretical foundations but also emphasise practical applications, such as coding, and delve into ethical considerations surrounding AI. Schools will have the flexibility to either offer AI as a standalone subject or integrate it into existing science and information technology classes.
This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to become a global leader in AI development and innovation. The Ministry of Education has also issued guidelines for the use of generative AI in schools, stressing student data privacy and the responsible application of the technology. China is sending a clear message to the world: it is not just preparing its students for the future, but actively shaping it.
