Australia enhances integrity of its international edu sector

The Australian government has announced a package of measures to strengthen integrity in the international education system. These measures include!

written by: Szilvi – Continent Surfer
  • Closing a loophole that allows education providers to shift international students who have been in Australia for less than six months from genuine study to an arrangement designed to facilitate access to work in Australia.
  • Increasing the amount of savings international students will need in order to get a student visa.
  • Applying additional scrutiny to high-risk cohorts and asking for additional documents to prevent fraud in applications.
  • Considering using its powers under Section 97 of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) to issue suspension certificates to high-risk education providers.

These measures are designed to protect genuine international students from exploitation and to ensure that the international education sector is a fair and competitive market.

The government has said that these are just the first steps in its reform agenda for the international education sector. The government is also considering further measures, such as introducing a code of conduct for education providers and establishing a new independent body to oversee the sector.

The government’s announcement has been welcomed by stakeholders in the international education sector. Universities Australia, which represents Australia’s universities, said that the measures were “a strong signal that the government is committed to ensuring the integrity of the international education sector”.

The Australian Council for Private Education and Training, which represents private education providers, said that the measures were “necessary to protect students and to ensure that the sector is fair and competitive”.

The government’s announcement is a positive step towards ensuring that the international education sector is a safe and rewarding experience for all students.
