South Africa

The southernmost part of the cradle of life, full of excitement, adventure and beautiful landscapes! The Republic of South Africa is the most developed and one of the richest countries on the African continent. With more than 11 official languages spoken in a vast country of 55 million people, it can be difficult to navigate this diverse cultural landscape on your own.
European explorers were attracted to circumnavigate Africa as early as the 15th century, but the first settlers arrived in Cape Verde with Dutch traders in 1652. From then on, the discovery and later conquest and colonization of the region, first by the Dutch and later by the British colonial empire, entered the history books. Centuries of long, hard-fought struggle followed.
It regained its political and social independence in 1994, and has since become one of Africa’s most dominant economies and societies, the ‘Rainbow’ nation dreamed up by Nelson Mandela.

The Cape of Good Hope

Well, no! This is not the southernmost part of Africa, although most of you would think so. The southernmost part of Africa is Cape Agulhas, a good 200 km south-east of here, where the Atlantic and Pacific currents meet. The Cape of Good Hope, the most south-westerly point in Africa, owes its name to King Juan II of Portugal, who first named it Cape of Storms after the sailor Bartolomeo Dias, who sailed around it because of the storms and the difficulty of navigation in winter, but the king wanted to be more hopeful for future expeditions, so he gave it the name.

Cape Town

The city owes its unique natural features to its location and Table Mountain, which juts out of the sea. Cape Town is the European tourist gateway to Africa and the oldest settlement in the country. The first Europeans to settle here were the employees of the Dutch East India Shipping Company, who built the refueling station for the merchant fleet that later developed into the city.
Today, Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and the seat of Parliament. The government is located in Pretoria, while Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. As the country’s second-largest city, it is a true metropolis, with a mix of modern and classical buildings. Cape Town’s magnificent port is one of the busiest in the world, both commercially and privately.
