Which Is Safer: Right or Left-Side Driving?

About one-third of the world’s countries drive on the left, while the majority follow a right-side system. But which is actually safer?

🚗 The Origins of Left-Side Driving
Left-hand traffic dates back to ancient times. In the Middle Ages, knights rode on the left to keep their right hands free for their swords in case of attack. This tradition was later adopted by several countries, especially those influenced by British colonization.

🌍 Where Do They Drive on the Left?
Some countries that still follow left-hand traffic today:

  • Europe: United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus.
  • Asia: Japan, India, Indonesia, Thailand.
  • Africa: South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania.
  • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand.
  • Caribbean: Jamaica, Barbados.

Which System Is Safer?
Some studies suggest left-side driving may have advantages, as most people are right-handed and may better perceive dangers this way. Others argue that right-side driving is more practical since most of the world follows it, making international travel and transport easier.

💬 What Do You Think? Have you ever driven in a left-side traffic country? Which system do you find more practical? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇
