What are spiders doing on the Christmas tree in Ukraine?

Many locals in Ukraine decorate their Christmas trees with cobwebs and plastic spiders. The Halloween tradition comes from a folk tale about a poor woman who had no money to put up a fancy Christmas tree and woke up on Christmas morning to find the tree had been woven with spiders. Finding a spider at Christmas is good luck.
