UK Tightens Immigration Rules with Focus on Skills and Integration

The UK government has recently released its Immigration White Paper, outlining significant changes for those seeking to enter the country. The measures aim to reduce net migration by around 100,000 people per year. The overarching goal is to restore public trust in the immigration system while ensuring that new visa routes align with the UK’s long-term skills and security objectives.

The White Paper emphasises that skilled, self-sufficient migrants will continue to be welcome, but under stricter conditions. Skilled worker visas will generally require university-level degrees, and salary thresholds will increase. Social care visas will be closed to new overseas applicants, although those already in the UK with work rights can extend or switch visas until 2028.

Changes are also coming to study visas. Graduates will be able to stay in the UK for only 18 months after their studies, down from the current two years. Additionally, a levy on income from international student fees is being considered to fund domestic skills training.

The government is placing a strong emphasis on the integration of immigrants. English language requirements for Skilled Workers and other visa routes will rise, and adult dependents of workers and students will also need to demonstrate English proficiency. The standard qualifying period for settlement will increase to ten years for most visa routes, up from the current five, although faster routes to settlement and citizenship will remain for those making significant economic or social contributions.

The White Paper also includes stricter measures to tackle illegal working and foreign criminals, as well as strengthened border management. The aim is to create a more transparent, fair, and beneficial immigration system for British society.
