UK ETA Guide: How to Take Perfect Photos for Your Application

In 2025, the UK extended its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to EU citizens. To ensure a smooth approval process by the automated system, submitting high-quality photos and documents is vital.

Passport Photo Requirements

  • Capture the entire data page, ensuring all four corners are visible.
  • The Machine Readable Zone (MRZ)—the lines of code at the bottom—must be crystal clear.
  • Use landscape orientation in .jpg or .jpeg format (min. $600 \times 750$ resolution).
  • Avoid glare, shadows, or flash reflections. Only photos of physical passports are accepted—no screenshots or photocopies.

Selfie (Digital Face Photo) Rules

  • The photo must be taken within the last 3 months and must differ from your passport photo.
  • Stand against a plain, light-colored (ideally white) background with no other objects or people visible.
  • Use portrait orientation, including your head, shoulders, and upper body.
  • Ensure even lighting; shadows on the face or background are not allowed.
  • Important: Remove glasses if possible, avoid headwear (unless for medical/religious reasons), and never use beauty filters.

Failure to meet these strict criteria may result in application rejection and travel delays.
