The UK ETA is a digital travel authorisation required for citizens of visa-exempt countries travelling to the United Kingdom or transiting through its airports. Its purpose is to conduct preliminary security checks, enabling the government to gain better insight into those entering the country. This system does not replace visas but adds an extra layer of security.
The ETA system applies to individuals who can travel to the UK without a visa for tourism, business, or short-term study. This includes citizens of the European Union, the United States, Canada, and numerous other countries. The necessity of the authorisation depends on the travel date and the nationality stated in the passport.
Who is exempt from the ETA?
- Those holding a valid UK visa.
- Those with permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode).
- Those transiting through UK airports without passing through border control (check with the airline if unsure).
- British or Irish citizens.
- Holders of British Overseas Territories citizens’ passports.
- Residents of Ireland travelling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
- Children travelling with a France-UK school trip travel information form.
- Dual citizens: British or Irish dual citizens do not need an ETA if they have a valid British or Irish passport.
The UK ETA system was introduced for several reasons. Firstly, to strengthen border security by allowing the government to pre-screen traveller data and identify potential security risks. Secondly, to control immigration by providing a clearer picture of who enters the country, thus reducing the risk of illegal immigration. Thirdly, to increase efficiency by speeding up the border control process, as traveller data is available in advance.
The system is being rolled out gradually, with the government continually expanding the list of countries whose citizens require an ETA. For European citizens, the ETA will be required from April 2nd, 2025.
The ETA application is completed online, where applicants provide personal details, passport information, and answers to security questions.

Planning a trip? Apply for your travel authorization NOW!
It is advised to apply in good time, several days before travel!
What does the ETA allow?
- Stays of up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, business, or short-term study.
- Stays of up to 3 months under the Creative Worker visa concession.
- Transit through UK airports with border control passage.
If travelling to the UK for other reasons, check if a visa is required. Individual circumstances vary, and an immigration advisor may be necessary to determine visa requirements.
The ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Border control officers retain the right to ask further questions and make the final decision. The ETA has an expiry date, so travellers must ensure it remains valid for their travel dates. Accurate data entry is essential.
Always verify information from official sources and factor in potential processing times when planning travel. Keep the ETA approval confirmation on hand during the journey.

Do you have longer term plans and would like to settle there instead? Are you unsure whether your pre-Brexit residence will entitle you to any kind of status in the country?

The London Underground, affectionately known as ‘The Tube‘, is not merely a mode of transport, but a living historical monument. Inaugurated in 1863 as the world’s first underground railway, it has continued to evolve while preserving its rich heritage. Many of its stations retain the architectural and artistic styles of past centuries, from tiled walls to ornate mosaics. Within the depths of some stations, traces of World War II can still be found, when they served as shelters during the bombings. The metro network is not only an integral part of the city’s vibrant life, but also a unique journey through time, where the past and present are closely intertwined.
