The World’s Happiest Cities for 2025: Where Well-being is Part of Daily Life
Happiness hinges on many factors, but our living environment fundamentally influences our well-being. What exactly makes a city “happy,” though? The 2025 Happy City Index, released by the Institute for the Quality of Life, analysed 82 indicators across six categories – Citizens, Governance, Environment, Economy, Health, and Mobility – identifying 31 “Gold Cities.” We spoke to residents of the top five scoring places to understand what makes them so content.
Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, predictably secured the top spot, excelling in the Environment and Economy categories, as well as citizen engagement and cultural opportunities. Residents highlight the free city events, vibrant food and cultural scene, and excellent cycling and public transport infrastructure. The city’s commitment to sustainability and its strong sense of community also contribute to residents’ satisfaction.
Zurich, Switzerland, ranked second, achieved exceptionally high marks in the Citizens and Governance categories. Residents emphasise the stress-free daily life, high level of safety, punctual public transport, and the city’s cleanliness. Clear rules and guidelines, along with over a thousand public drinking fountains, also contribute to the easy and predictable living experience. Singapore placed third, particularly excelling in the newly created Health metric, which considers overall safety, public health initiatives, and financial protection for health expenses. Effective governance and early public housing schemes also contribute to residents’ financial security and improved quality of life.
Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, often called the “world’s smallest big city,” combines urban amenities with a small community feel. The city scored well across all metrics, especially in Citizens, Environment, and Health. Residents mention integrated bike lanes, green spaces, and free public events that foster a sense of community. Antwerp, Belgium, clinched the fifth spot, outperforming its larger sister-city Brussels. The city boasts reliable public transportation, safe and easy cycling, and a compact size. Progressive policies like support for working families, social housing, and sustainability all contribute to an easier and more enjoyable life.
