The world’s first railless train has begun test operations in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, China
Zhuzhou, a city in Hunan Province, China, is now home to the world’s first trackless train. This innovative vehicle, known as the Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART), has commenced testing. Developed by CRRC Corporation, the ART represents a groundbreaking departure from traditional rail systems. Instead of relying on conventional steel tracks, it operates on a “virtual track” consisting of white dashed lines painted on the road surface.
The train itself is equipped with rubber tires and utilises a sophisticated system of sensors and pre-programmed routes to navigate its path. This technology allows the ART to follow the designated route with precision, effectively mimicking the operation of a traditional train but without the need for physical rails.
With a capacity to carry up to 300 passengers, the ART offers a potentially transformative solution for urban transportation. It promises a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional rail systems, particularly in scenarios where the construction of dedicated rail infrastructure may be impractical or prohibitively expensive. The ART’s ability to operate on existing roads could significantly reduce infrastructure costs and minimise disruption to urban environments.
The initial tests in Zhuzhou will be crucial in evaluating the ART’s performance and feasibility in real-world conditions. If successful, this technology could revolutionise urban transportation in China and beyond, paving the way for a new era of sustainable and efficient public transit.
