The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): What You Need to Know
The United Kingdom is implementing an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) program for travelers from eligible non-visa countries. This new requirement grants permission to visit the UK.
Here’s a breakdown:
What is the UK ETA?
- The ETA is a digital travel permission, similar to the US ESTA and the EU’s ETIAS, designed to enhance security.
- It allows approved travelers to:
– Stay up to six months for tourism, visiting family/friends, business, or study.
– Stay up to three months under the Creative Worker visa concession.
– Transit through the UK.
- An approved ETA is valid for two years and permits multiple visits. A new ETA is required if you obtain a new passport.
Who Needs an ETA?
- From January 8th, 2025, travelers from eligible non-European countries require an ETA. This expands the initial rollout to countries in the Middle East, including Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
- From April 2nd 2025, travellers from eligible European countries will need an ETA, with applications opening March 5th 2025.
- All travelers, including infants and children, need an ETA.
Who is Exempt?
- British and Irish passport holders.
- Those with permission to live, work, or study in the UK.
- Those with a valid UK visa.
- Legal residents of Ireland entering the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man.
How to Apply:
- Applications can be submitted through the official UK ETA app or the UK government website.
- You can apply on behalf of others.
- Decisions are typically made within three working days, though additional checks may extend this timeframe.
- Approved applications receive email confirmation, and the ETA is electronically linked to the passport used in the application.
- Denied applications may require a standard visa, temporary work visa, or transit visa.
Cost:
The UK ETA costs £10.
Validity:
- The ETA is valid for two years from approval.
- A new ETA is needed if your passport expires within that period.
