As the days shorten and temperatures drop, trees prepare for winter by shutting down their food production. The green pigment in leaves, chlorophyll, which is essential for photosynthesis, begins to break down. As chlorophyll fades, other chemicals that have been present all along, but were masked by the dominant green, become visible. Carotene, the same pigment found in carrots, and anthocyanin take over, revealing the brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds that we associate with autumn. This is the tree’s way of conserving energy for the colder months ahead.

While Northern Ireland experienced a record-breaking warm summer and a very warm September, it was also exceptionally dull, limiting the amount of sunshine needed for the most vibrant displays. This has led some experts to predict a less spectacular year for autumn colours, though the warm weather has also delayed the process, creating a shorter window for the show.

Despite the less than ideal conditions in some regions, there is still plenty to see and enjoy. Even if the colours are not at their most brilliant, the changing leaves are a clear sign of the season’s transition.
