The Revival of a Lost Art: Hitchhiking in the 21st Century

The forgotten practice of hitchhiking is experiencing a surprising revival among a new generation of travellers. Once commonplace, then stigmatised as dangerous, this radical mode of travel is now being rediscovered by those seeking authentic human connection, thrilling adventures, and a more sustainable way to explore the world. As showcased by Austrian duo Alexandra Menz and Bernhard Endlicher, who have documented over 4,000 rides in more than 65 countries, hitchhiking is not a relic of the past but a viable and rewarding method for the future.

The decline of hitchhiking began in the mid-20th century, fuelled by high-profile crime stories and a campaign of fear. The FBI, for instance, famously branded it a “menace.” However, this fear-based narrative largely ignored the fact that hitchhiking was a lifeline for many, particularly during the Great Depression and World War II, when it was seen as a patriotic duty to conserve resources. While it faded from mainstream culture in many affluent countries, it endured in others, like Cuba and parts of rural Europe. Today, thanks in part to social media, a new wave of adventurers is challenging old stigmas and sharing their positive experiences online.

For many of today’s hitchhikers, the practice is not about efficiency, but about embracing detours and trusting in the kindness of strangers. It’s a powerful way to break down barriers, meet people from all walks of life, and discover hidden parts of the world. While safety remains a primary concern for solo travellers, particularly women, many seasoned hitchhikers argue that a strong gut instinct and common-sense precautions are their best tools. In an era where ride-sharing apps have normalised getting into a car with a stranger, traditional hitchhiking offers a more personal, meaningful, and genuinely human experience, proving that sometimes, the most radical journeys are the ones taken on a whim.
