The Real-World Magic of Studio Ghibli

The animated worlds of Studio Ghibli, which often feel both fantastical and familiar, weren’t born from pure imagination. As the studio celebrates its 40th anniversary, we’re exploring the real-world locations across Japan that inspired some of its most beloved films.

The ancient forests of Yakushima, a UNESCO-listed island, are widely believed to be the basis for the mystical world of Princess Mononoke. With their towering, moss-draped cedars and spiritual atmosphere, they are a testament to the powerful connection between nature and fantasy.

For fans of Spirited Away, the journey leads to Dōgo Onsen in Matsuyama. This is one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, and its grand, pagoda-like structure and winding corridors were the unmistakable inspiration for the film’s enchanting bathhouse.

Finally, the gentle, rolling landscapes of the Sayama Hills provided the backdrop for My Neighbor Totoro. Known today as “Totoro’s Forest,” these protected woodlands and rural areas offer visitors the chance to step into the film’s tranquil world and see the traditional Japanese countryside that sparked Miyazaki’s imagination.

All of these locations are profoundly cherished, with local communities and conservationists working to preserve their unique magic for future generations, ensuring their legacy endures beyond the screen.
