The Nine Forbidden Places on Earth Where Entry Can Lead to Arrest or Death
Human curiosity knows no bounds; we are endlessly drawn to the mysterious, the restricted, and the strictly guarded places of the world. Across the globe, there are closed zones where stepping inside can result in dire, even fatal, consequences for any outsider. This article presents nine such locations, each closed off for extraordinary reasons, be it centuries of dark history, the protection of ancient tribes, dangerous wildlife, or critical military secrets.
Nine Highly Restricted Global Zones
- Poveglia Island, Italy: Near Venice, this island served as a quarantine station and hospital for plague victims in the 1700s, with up to 160,000 people allegedly dying there. It later became a psychiatric institution. Due to the collapsing buildings and the haunting history, authorities strictly forbid visits. Trespassers face immediate arrest.
- North Sentinel Island, India: Located in the Indian Ocean, this island is home to the Sentinelese, one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes. The area is a no-go zone, encircled by a 5-kilometre naval exclusion zone to protect the tribe from outside diseases. However, the tribe is known to attack visitors with arrows, and following two fatal incidents, the Indian government has enforced a complete approach ban.
- Bohemian Grove, USA (California): This privately owned forest is the site of the secretive, three-week-long annual gathering of the influential Bohemian Club. Entry is strictly by invitation, and trespassing journalists have been detained and escorted off the premises by guards. The location’s role in political and business networking has fuelled numerous conspiracy theories.
- Niihau Island, USA (Hawaii): Private property since 1864, the island is restricted to its native inhabitants and the owners, the Robinson family. This isolation serves to protect nature, wildlife, and the century-old traditional way of life. Even celebrities and outside visitors need special, rare permission to approach.
- Ilha da Queimada Grande, Brazil: Also known as Snake Island, this mini-island is home to thousands of highly venomous Golden Lancehead Vipers. The Brazilian government strictly prohibits tourism; only specially authorised researchers may land, following extreme safety protocols, making it one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
- Diego Garcia, British Overseas Territory (Indian Ocean): This formerly evacuated atoll is now a joint UK/US military base. The site is shrouded in secrecy, reportedly a testing ground for stealth technologies and the location of alleged CIA programs. Military security swiftly removes intruders, and much of the island’s documentation remains classified.
- Lascaux Cave, France: Closed to the public since 1963, these 17,000-year-old Palaeolithic paintings were being severely damaged by visitors’ breath (CO2), humidity, and lights. Scientists work inside under strictly limited access and time constraints. Tourists can only visit the exact replica, Lascaux II.
- Surtsey, Iceland: Formed during a volcanic eruption in 1963, this island is globally famous as a pristine, human-interference-free ecosystem. Only specially permitted geologists and biologists may work on it to study colonisation by life. Strict police and conservation rules ensure tourists and amateurs are kept away.
- Area 51, USA (Nevada): The most secretive experimental air force base, allegedly used for testing advanced aircraft and technology. The airspace and surrounding land are guarded 24/7 by armed security and helicopters. Any attempt to trespass is physically and legally impossible for outsiders to succeed.
These places fascinate our imagination while serving as stark warnings: the world’s most interesting restricted areas are closed for essential preservation and protection. While the allure of forbidden fruit is strong, here, the risk is not just legal consequence but a genuine threat to life. True exploration sometimes means respecting the boundaries set by both man and nature.
