The Night of the Radishes at Christmas?
The Halloween pumpkin carving is becoming increasingly popular in our country too – Mexico has a tradition of carving vegetables for the holiday. At least in the Mexican city of Oaxaca, where radishes are traditionally carved on Christmas. The Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rabanos) is a tradition that dates back more than a century: traders, hoping to attract more customers to the local market before and after masses, began to display small statues and puppets carved from radishes in front of their wares, with the intention of selling them. In 1897, the then mayor of the town declared the Night of the Radishes an official holiday, which is still held on 23 December. Christmas radishes are grown especially for the occasion, so eating them is less recommended.
