The End of Easy Access: Mandatory UK ETA Starts This February – Everything You Need to Know

For decades, European Union citizens and travelers from visa-exempt countries enjoyed seamless travel to the United Kingdom. A simple passport check was all it took to cross the border for a weekend in London or a business meeting in Manchester. However, that era is officially coming to a close.

Starting February 25, 2026, the UK government will fully implement its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. This marks the final end of the “grace period” and introduces a mandatory pre-screening process for all non-visa travelers.

What is the UK ETA?

The ETA is a digital permission to travel. It is not a visa, but rather a security requirement that allows the UK Home Office to screen visitors before they even arrive at the border. While the system was introduced gradually starting in late 2023, it is now becoming a strict requirement for citizens of 85 countries, including all EU member states.

Key Details: Cost, Validity, and Rules

If you are planning a trip to the UK after the February deadline, here are the essential facts you need to know:

  • The Cost: Each application costs £10
  • Validity: Once approved, your ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.
  • Stay Duration: It allows for unlimited entries during the validity period, with each stay lasting up to six months.
  • Application Process: The easiest way to apply is via the official UK ETA mobile app or website.

Don’t Get Left at the Gate

One of the most critical aspects of the new system is the role of transport operators. Airlines, ferry companies, and international rail services (like Eurostar) are now legally required to verify that passengers have a valid ETA before boarding.

If you arrive at the airport without an approved ETA, you will likely be denied boarding. This rule also applies to passengers who are only transiting through the UK and have to pass through border control.

When Should You Apply?

While the system is highly efficient—with 13.3 million applications already processed—and most applicants receive their approval within minutes, the Home Office recommends applying at least three working days before your departure. In rare cases, further manual checks may be required, which can delay the process.

Who is Exempt?

Not everyone needs an ETA. The most notable exceptions include:

  1. British and Irish citizens.
  2. EU Citizens with Settled or Pre-Settled Status: If you lived in the UK legally before the end of 2020 and successfully applied for the EU Settlement Scheme, you do not need an ETA. You can continue to use your digital status to enter the country.
  3. Holders of a valid UK visa.

Why the Change?

This move is part of the UK’s post-Brexit strategy to digitise its borders and increase national security. By requiring an ETA, authorities can identify potential threats or individuals who do not meet entry requirements before they reach British soil.

While it adds a small administrative step and a minor cost to your travel plans, the ETA is designed to make the actual border crossing faster and more automated through electronic gates (e-gates).

Bottom line: If you’re heading to the UK this spring, make sure your digital paperwork is in order before you pack your bags!

Did you know?

Even if you are just passing through a UK airport to catch a connecting flight to another country, you may still need an ETA. Unlike many other nations, the UK’s new system applies to “landside” transit, meaning that if you have to pass through border control to collect luggage or change terminals, your digital authorization must be active before you even take off from your home country.
