Some wonders of the world…

Yesterday, in a conversation with a friend, I realised that I couldn’t list the seven wonders of the world, but I should know. I thought I’d look it up, but then I realised I’d better make my own list of wonders that I’d definitely like to visit or try. I emphasize that this is a subjective compilation based on my own opinion!

The Great Pyramid of Giza

Many of us have been to Egypt and probably admired the eternal abode of the Pharaohs. Although the Great Pyramid is no longer as magnificent as it was in its heyday, it is still impressive and monumental. And when illuminated by the night lights, what a spectacle it is. There are many theories to this day as to how they were able to build such a thing at that time, even the UFOs have been “accused” of possibly helping to build it. The point is that when you visit Egypt, don’t just indulge in the exoticism of the sea, but be sure to visit the shadow of the pyramids.

Eurotunnel

It is the greatest achievement of modern human architecture and knowledge, linking the British Isles with the continent. It has been a dream of many, including Napoleon the great conqueror, but its realisation was a long time coming, right through the 20th century. Furthermore, it took enormous financial and human resources, but Europe’s great dream has come true, and we can reach England “on dry land”. It’s worth a try, although you don’t see much while travelling, and you have to follow serious rules, but it’s still an experience.

Great Wall of China

Supposedly the only man-made structure that can be seen with the naked eye from outer space, but I have not been able to verify this to be true. The wall was built over many years, centuries, to protect China’s interior from barbarian hordes from outside. It is lined with gates, ramparts and forts, and is about 7000 km long, so you definitely don’t want to walk along it.

Airbus380

The world’s largest man-made passenger aircraft to date. Its appearance and performance are exceptional. Passengers are accommodated on two decks, surrounded by a wealth of luxuries not available on the average aircraft. Its size means that not all airports can accommodate it, so you can feel truly privileged to enjoy the sound of an Airbus 380’s roaring turbines as it soars through the skies towards some far-off, exotic destination.

Eiffel Tower

Now that’s a check mark for me. I don’t like the French, because they are so self-contained and conceited in my opinion, but they can build, and they have a sense of beauty. Not so true of the tower, though. I did, however, like the huge mass of iron towering over Paris. It’s definitely worth going up and looking around from the tower if you get to the French capital. Did you know that the Eiffel Tower is held together by 2.5 million rivets?

Bovington Tank Museum

An unusual ‘wonder’ for everyone, but not for me. Anyone who loves war relics, including the monsters of war, tanks and armoured vehicles, should visit this place at least once in their life. History permeates the museum, the smell of gunpowder and blood is almost present alongside the ghosts of soldiers who died heroically. It’s just the thing for a day out in England, but if you really want to see the whole exhibition in detail, a day is definitely not enough.

London

My favourite city, and I’m probably not alone. Every time I’ve been there, I’ve been amazed by the way it combines the beauty of the past with the modern wonders of the city, while still maintaining its harmony. It gives me the impression of a vibrant yet calm city. I always have to walk through Tower Bridge, it’s simply a must. Actually, I used to march back there and have a nice sandwich at the little buffet on the right bank, washed down with a cold Red Bull. Although it’s crowded, the people are courteous and kind to strangers. I like English cold blood! You’ll find a wealth of museums and relics of bygone eras, but if you just want a good meal or drink, you can do it in a small pub on almost every corner. Interestingly, the skyscrapers don’t detract from the historic atmosphere of the city and the way a plane from Heathrow flies over them every minute is a beautiful sight, especially when spiced up with the night-lit London. I won’t sing your praises here, but go and see it.

Easter Island Mysterious Statues

Easter Island is located at the southeastern end of the Polynesian Islands. It’s not a very interesting place, except for the nearly 900 stone statues. The origins of the huge structures are still unclear, they may have been made sometime in the 13th or 14th century, but why and who made them remains a mystery.  Only the heads of the statues are visible, but if you dig a little deeper you can see the bodies, and they are around 4 metres in size. I’d like to visit this place, because I’ve always been fascinated by mysteries like this, and although I wouldn’t know the answer, seeing one is something to behold.

That’s all for now, but I encourage you to make your own list, not a bucket list because that’s morbid, but a list of things you’d like to see in the world.

Did you know?

Easter Island is also largely free from pollution, and a fun fact is that it’s home to some of the clearest ocean waters in the world. The water around the island is transparent up to a depth of 50 to 60 metres. It’s an oasis for snorkelers and divers who marvel at the colourful corals and sea life beneath the surface.
