From towering supertrees to vibrant street food stalls, here’s how to make the most of your two days in the Lion City.

Day 1: Gardens and Glamour

Morning: A Tropical Urban Oasis

Start your day by immersing yourself in nature. Take the MRT to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This vast green space is a sanctuary of peace, perfect for a morning stroll. The highlight is the National Orchid Garden (a small entrance fee applies), home to over 1,000 species of orchids. It’s a breathtaking display of colour and a testament to Singapore’s “City in a Garden” vision.

Afternoon: Chinatown’s Timeless Charm

From the gardens, take a short taxi or MRT ride to Chinatown. This bustling district is a sensory explosion. Visit the magnificent Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, an ornate four-story temple that is as beautiful from the outside as it is inside. Wander through the vibrant street market, haggle for souvenirs, and then head to a hawker centre for lunch.

For an authentic and affordable culinary experience, go to the Maxwell Food Centre. This is a food lover’s paradise, offering an array of local dishes. Be sure to try the famous Hainanese chicken rice from the Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice stall—it even has a Michelin Bib Gourmand!

Evening: A Night Under the Supertrees

As the sun begins to set, head to Marina Bay. This area is the heart of modern Singapore. Walk along the waterfront promenade and take in the stunning views of the city skyline. Your destination is the iconic Gardens by the Bay.

Entry to the main park is free, but you’ll want a ticket for the stunning Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Inside the Cloud Forest, you’ll be met with a massive indoor waterfall and a lush mountain trail. Afterward, make your way to the Supertree Grove for the spectacular free Garden Rhapsody light and sound show. The supertrees come alive with a mesmerising display of colours and music. It’s the perfect end to your first day.

Day 2: Culture and Cuisine

Morning: Arab Street & Haji Lane

Begin your second day in the vibrant Kampong Glam district, Singapore’s Malay-Arab quarter. The centrepiece is the grand Sultan Mosque with its stunning golden dome. Be sure to dress modestly if you wish to enter.

Just around the corner is Haji Lane, a narrow, colourful street known for its indie boutiques, vintage shops, and incredible street art. It’s a fantastic spot for a coffee break and a great place to pick up unique, locally designed items.

Afternoon: River Walk and A Touch of History

Make your way to the Singapore River. Take a leisurely stroll along the quays—Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Robertson Quay. This area, once a hub for shipping, is now lined with historic shop houses converted into restaurants and bars.

Cross the river to see the Merlion, Singapore’s half-lion, half-fish symbol, and get that iconic photo with the Marina Bay Sands in the background. If you have time and are interested in history, the National Gallery Singapore is a must-visit, housed in two magnificent colonial-era buildings and showcasing a vast collection of Southeast Asian art.

Evening: Local Food & Airport Marvel

For your final meal, skip the fancy restaurants and head to a different hawker centre. Consider Lau Pa Sat, a beautiful Victorian-era market with an array of stalls and a fantastic satay street that opens in the evening. This is your chance to try authentic satay (grilled meat skewers) in an incredible setting.

Finally, before you fly out, you absolutely must experience Jewel Changi Airport. This destination in itself is a marvel. Arrive early for your flight to explore the stunning indoor forest, the Shiseido Forest Valley, and watch the mesmerising HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. It’s an unforgettable final impression of Singapore, showcasing its unique blend of nature, architecture, and innovation right to the last minute.

With this itinerary, you’ll leave Singapore feeling like you’ve truly experienced its heart, from its lush gardens and rich history to its incredible food and modern marvels.

Did you know?

The name “Singapore” means “Lion City,” but there have never been any lions on the island. The name comes from a legend about a Sumatran prince who, in the 14th century, saw a creature he thought was a lion and named the island “Singapura” (“lion” in Sanskrit, “city” in Malay).
