Should I Move Back Home for My Parents, or Do I Have the Right to My Own Life?

More and more Hungarians living abroad face this dilemma. Our parents are aging, perhaps no longer as independent as they once were. Meanwhile, we are far away, and deep down, the question lingers: would it be the right thing to return home? After all, they were always there for us—we can’t just abandon them…

But what about our own lives, our dreams, and everything we’ve built over the years? Does the responsibility we feel override our desires? Where is the balance between duty and the right to make our own choices?

There is no single right answer—every situation is different. For some, family is the top priority, while others believe they can only truly support their loved ones if they first build their own happiness.
