Seven Countries, One Winner: Europe’s Best Christmas Market
Seeking a magical, wintery Christmas away from the Australian summer heat, one family embarked on a train journey through seven European countries and eight cities to find the continent’s best Christmas market.
They indulged in local delicacies, from kartoffelpuffer in Mainz and klobása in Prague to langos in Budapest. While they discovered many mulled wine variations, the standout was Nuremberg’s feuerzangenbowle—a flaming, rum-laced punch that captured their hearts by the riverside.
Though they enjoyed the crafts and festive cheer, popular destinations like London (Leicester Square, Covent Garden) and Prague’s Old Town Square were overwhelmed by crowds, making the experience claustrophobic and often necessitating early arrival or eating meals standing up.
The ultimate winner, however, was an unexpected gem: Luxembourg City. At a time of overtourism, this small capital felt like a well-kept secret. The Winterlights festival offered festive magic without the crush of people. Short or non-existent queues, friendly vendors, and local delights like kniddelen (dumplings) and gromperekichelcher (potato cakes) provided a truly relaxed and enchanting holiday experience. Luxembourg City delivered the festive bliss they were searching for.
