Rising visa fees in New Zealand
From 1. October 2024, visa fees, which consist of fees and charges, will increase for most visa categories. This is part of an upgrade to the immigration system announced by New Zealand Immigration earlier this month. Let’s take a look at what exactly is happening and how the new visa fees will be structured.

Why are New Zealand visa fees increasing?
Immigration is an important contribution to the country’s economy, labour market and community.
The changes to visa fees, which come into effect in October, have been set at an appropriate level to reduce operating costs and improve efficiency, and to properly reflect the benefits received by those who use the immigration service.
New Zealand aims to support the security and integrity of its borders, the country’s international and humanitarian commitments, and the reunification of friends and family, not least to provide employers with access to capital and workers with key skills.
By improving the immigration system and modernising the visa system, they aim to make it sustainable and self-financing. They hope the changes will make the visa process more efficient.
New visa fees in New Zealand
The increase in visa fees is also due to inflation and the increase in the value of the dollar, but it is important to note that the conditions and requirements of entry to New Zealand will not be affected. New Zealand Immigration will remain responsible for processing visas.
The Government has also stated that the new fees are competitive with those in Australia and the UK and it is believed that New Zealand will continue to be an attractive destination for those wishing to visit, study, work and settle.
Below is a list of the current visa fees and the new visa fees that will apply from 1 October 2024, but please note that travellers to New Zealand should always check the official Immigration website for the latest visa fees!
Pacific Access visas
The new visa fees, which come into effect on 1 October, apply to most visa categories. The Government has also announced reduced visa fees for Pacific Islanders as New Zealand remains committed to supporting its Pacific neighbours. Visitors from these countries will continue to pay subsidised fees when applying for a visa.
Did you know?
In addition to the objectives and aspirations of the New Zealand Immigration Service as outlined above, that those who use and benefit from the immigration system should meet the costs of its operation. This means that visa fees are collected from visa applicants and are not paid from public funds.
