New research from Nature Food has revealed that New Zealand (Aotearoa) is remarkably self-sufficient, making it one of the most likely countries to survive global crises like war, famine, or even political upheaval like “Trump’s tariffs.” The study analysed 186 countries’ ability to feed their populations without imports, and NZ came out on top, fully self-sufficient in five out of seven essential food groups (dairy, fish and seafood, fruits, meat, and vegetables).

Despite this impressive resilience, there’s a recurring “technical glitch”: the researchers forgot to put New Zealand on the world map summarising their findings! This isn’t a new phenomenon; NZ has famously been omitted from maps in various international settings, even after major events like the Paris Olympics. While New Zealanders won’t go hungry, they might just get lost on the global stage!
