Good news for travellers! Two UK airports, Birmingham and Edinburgh, have officially abolished the 100ml liquid restriction for hand luggage. Passengers can now carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers up to two litres in their carry-on. This change, made possible by new security technology, is historic as it overturns a 19-year-old rule that an entire generation of travellers has grown accustomed to.

The abolition of the 100ml limit, in place since 2006, significantly eases travel for passengers, who no longer need to worry about packing full-sized shampoos or larger sunscreens. However, metal water bottles still need to be emptied before security checks. It’s crucial to note that UK airports can only lift the restriction once their security protocols are approved by the Department for Transport. Currently, only Birmingham and Edinburgh have received this authorisation, meaning the 100ml limit remains in effect at other UK airports, although liquids no longer need to be removed from bags for screening there.

Aberdeen, Bristol, London City, Newcastle, and Teesside airports are expected to be the next to receive approval to lift the restriction. However, travelers must remain aware that different rules may apply at their return airport, so it’s essential to check local regulations before flying.
