New respiratory virus spreads in China, but no need for panic
new respiratory virus, HMPV, is spreading in China, stirring memories of the COVID-19 pandemic for many. However, there is no reason for concern, as the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been known for decades and has caused minor outbreaks worldwide before.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that spreads globally every year, especially during the colder months. It often causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but in certain cases, such as in the elderly or those with weaker immune systems, it can lead to more severe illnesses like pneumonia. In countries with well-developed healthcare systems, the virus is rarely fatal.
Although HMPV has been around for decades, no vaccine is available yet. However, scientists are working on developing one that would protect against both HMPV and RSV.
