Majorca’s Capital Declares War on Mass Tourism: New Accommodations and Party Boats Banned
Palma, the bustling capital of Majorca, is taking decisive action to curb overtourism and preserve the quality of life for its residents, as well as its cultural heritage. Years of overcrowding, disruptive parties, and rising housing difficulties have created significant tension, prompting the city council to introduce strict new measures.
Mayor Jaime Martínez Llabrés announced a total ban on the creation of new tourist accommodations across the entire municipality of Palma, and party boats will be removed from the city’s ports. The Mayor stated, “We are committed to quality, peaceful coexistence, and sustainability. This determines what kind of city and what kind of guests we want to see in Palma.”
This move aligns with a broader trend across Spain. Earlier this year, the Spanish government initiated a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals, which authorities believe have contributed to the explosive growth in property and rental prices, particularly in cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Palma’s strict new rules send a clear message: sustainable tourism is being prioritised over mass tourism.
