If Life Abroad Is Better, Why Do Some People Move Back Home?
Many believe that once someone moves abroad, they never consider returning. After all, salaries are higher, the future seems more predictable, and perhaps even the quality of life is better. Yet, many people find themselves moving back after months or even years. But why?
Homesickness? Some things are only truly appreciated once they’re gone—the familiar tastes, the language, the unique sense of humour… And of course, family and old friends. You may have built everything abroad—career, financial stability, even new relationships. But at some point, the question arises: Do I really want to live here forever? Or was this just a long detour?
Family? Parents are getting older, and they may not be as independent as before. Many feel they can’t leave them behind, even if life abroad offers countless opportunities.
Struggles with Fitting In? You might have spent years trying to integrate, yet still feel like an outsider. People are friendly, but they’re not really your people. Daily life runs smoothly, but deep down, you never truly feel at home.
Quality of Life? A higher salary doesn’t always mean a better life if most of your time is spent working. Some thrive in a fast-paced environment, while others prefer a quieter, more balanced life—even if it means earning less.
Of course, not everyone feels this way. Some stay abroad forever because they’ve found their place. Others spend years debating but ultimately remain. And some never consider returning because they feel their true home is elsewhere.
