Horror on the Intercity bus: Toddler found trapped in a suitcase

A shocking incident has rocked New Zealand after a two-year-old girl was found trapped inside a suitcase in the luggage hold of an intercity bus. The driver of the bus was alerted to the situation after he noticed suspicious movement within the luggage compartment. The young girl, who was wearing only a diaper, was immediately rescued and taken to the hospital for a full medical assessment. Police have begun an investigation into the matter.

The incident took place on a Sunday afternoon, when a bus travelling from Whangārei to Auckland made a planned stop in Kaiwaka. A passenger had requested access to their luggage, which is when the driver noticed the moving suitcase. Upon opening the suitcase, he was shocked to discover the little girl inside. According to detectives, the child had been inside the suitcase for nearly an hour.

Police have commended the bus driver for his swift and observant action, which prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome. The child’s condition was described as “minor,” but she underwent a comprehensive medical examination. The authorities have also informed Oranga Tamariki, the country’s child welfare service, about the incident.

Locals in Kaiwaka were deeply shocked by the event. Residents who spoke to the media said it was incomprehensible how someone could think of doing such a thing to a small child. One anonymous woman who spoke to local media expressed her relief that the child was physically unharmed but found the events themselves to be unfathomable.

A 27-year-old woman, charged with the ill-treatment of a child, has been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court. The police investigation is still ongoing, and further charges cannot be ruled out.
