Free Carry-On & Transparent Fares: A New Era for European Air Travel

Travellers across Europe can breathe a sigh of relief. A major change is coming to air travel, as the European Parliament has voted to ban airlines from charging extra fees for carry-on luggage. This landmark decision means every passenger will be allowed one free carry-on bag weighing up to seven kilograms, in addition to the small bag or backpack that fits under the seat. This move is a significant step towards more transparent and fair air travel for millions.

The decision was initiated by the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism. According to Vice-President Matteo Ricci, this represents a crucial step toward more equitable and predictable travel. For years, airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, have relied on a business model that adds numerous hidden fees for services like baggage and seat selection, often surprising passengers with a final cost much higher than the advertised price. This new rule aims to put an end to that practice.

Unsurprisingly, the airline industry has not welcomed the new regulation with open arms. Low-cost airlines will be hit particularly hard, as they generate a significant portion of their revenue from these ancillary fees. For example, Ryanair reported an impressive €4.7 billion in revenue from fees for baggage and seat selection last year alone. Industry experts have warned that airlines will likely have to raise their base ticket prices to offset this lost income, meaning while the cost is more transparent, the overall price may increase.

The removal of the carry-on fee is just one part of a comprehensive reform proposed by the Parliament. The package also includes several other key changes: children under 12 will be guaranteed a free seat next to their parent or guardian, and companions of passengers with reduced mobility will also receive a free seat. Most importantly, airlines will be required to clearly display the full, final price of a ticket from the very beginning, including all fees and charges.

These sweeping reforms are designed to make air travel across Europe more convenient, fairer, and more predictable for everyone. By prioritising passenger rights and transparency, the European Parliament is taking a stand against confusing pricing models and ensuring that travellers have a clearer understanding of what they are paying for, ultimately leading to a more positive travel experience.
