End of an Era: The World’s Busiest Airport is Closing

A monumental shift is coming to global aviation: the world’s currently busiest international airport, Dubai International Airport (DXB), is set to permanently close its doors in 2035. The facility, which has a 63-year history, first opened to the public in 1960.

DXB’s operations will be fully transferred to the Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This facility is undergoing a massive £28 billion (approximately $35 billion USD) development program, positioning it to become the world’s largest air hub. The complete relocation, culminating in 2035, will see all of DXB’s flights and services—including those of Dubai-based Emirates and flydubai—moving to the new airport located in Dubai World Central.

Following the expansion, Al Maktoum International Airport is projected to handle an annual passenger capacity of up to 260 million people, making it the absolute largest in the world. This strategic move solidifies Dubai’s dominance in global air travel and logistics, opening a new, modern chapter in the city’s aviation history.
