Elderly man faces drug smuggling charges after airport bust

An elderly man in his seventies is set to face trial on drug smuggling charges after being apprehended at Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest. Authorities discovered nearly 6 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a dental device within his luggage. The man was caught after arriving on a flight from Ecuador, with a layover in Istanbul, following a tip-off from the Airport Police Directorate. The street value of the seized cocaine is estimated to be over $550,000 USD.

The man, who has pleaded not guilty, claims he was unaware of the drugs in his bag. He stated that he was on a paid trip, commissioned via the internet, and was on his way to New Zealand. He claims that an acquaintance gave him the package, and he believed he was simply transporting an ordinary item. However, the prosecution does not believe his story and has requested his arrest and a prison sentence. If convicted, the 70-year-old man could face up to 20 years in prison.
