Austria to Eliminate “Tampon Tax” and VAT on Contraceptives by 2026
Starting January 1, 2026, Austria will officially abolish VAT on all menstrual products and contraceptives. This landmark reform means tampons, pads, condoms, and birth control pills will become significantly cheaper. Condoms, previously taxed at 20%, will see the most drastic price drop.
The initiative targets period poverty, as reports show that 20% of women in Austria struggle to afford essential hygiene products. Beyond tax cuts, the government is focusing on social responsibility, with over 250 educational institutions already providing free sanitary products. This move aims to de-stigmatize menstruation and ensure that reproductive health is treated as a fundamental right rather than a luxury, setting a progressive example for other nations to follow.
