Australia Issues Multiple Travel Warning Upgrades for the USA
The Australian government has strengthened its safety warnings for Australian travellers heading to the United States three times in recent weeks. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has toughened its advice in response to the Trump administration’s increasingly strict border controls and reports of foreigners being detained and deported.
While the overall safety rating for the USA remains green, indicating “exercise normal safety precautions,” DFAT has amplified warnings regarding potential detention at the border, the requirement to carry identification during domestic travel, and the possibility of electronic device inspections. Travel agency Flight Centre has reported a significant downturn in leisure travel to the US in April and anticipates this trend to continue in the short term.
Equality Australia has also cautioned LGBTQIA+ individuals to reconsider travel to the US, particularly if their passport gender differs from their birth-assigned gender or if they have a history of activism.
