Australia Day – The National Holiday of Australians

Australia Day is a big day for Australians, celebrated every year on January 26th. On this day, they remember how Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove in 1788 and established the first settlement. The holiday marks an important chapter in Australian history.

Nowadays, Australia Day is full of exciting activities: fireworks, concerts, festivals, and sports events await people. This is also the day when various awards are presented to those who have significantly contributed to the country. There’s something for everyone to celebrate – whether it’s time spent with friends or simply enjoying the sunshine and good vibes.

However, not everyone finds joy in this celebration. For Indigenous communities, this day often brings painful memories, as the arrival of the British settlers marked the loss of their lands and the suppression of their culture. Because of this, some refer to January 26th as “Invasion Day,” and there are those who wish for a new date that would be more inclusive for all Australians.
