The Forbidden Island: Poveglia, the Cursed Land
Just a few kilometers from Venice’s sparkling canals lies a place that even local fishermen avoid at all costs. Poveglia is not your typical Italian holiday destination – many know it as the most haunted island in the world.
Why is it shrouded in terror?
- The Shadow of the Plague: During the Black Death, the sick were exiled here. Legend has it that more than 160,000 people met their end on these shores, and to this day, a significant portion of the island’s soil is composed of human ash and bones.
- The Dark Asylum: In the 1920s, a psychiatric hospital opened on the island. Rumors suggest a mad doctor performed cruel experiments on patients before eventually throwing himself from the bell tower.
Today, the island stands abandoned as nature slowly reclaims the crumbling walls. Authorities strictly forbid visiting, but this doesn’t always stop fans of dark tourism…
