A New Furry Officer: Bonnie Joins the Family Court

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in South Australia has welcomed its newest—and perhaps most popular—staff member. Bonnie, a specially trained two-year-old assistance dog, officially took her oath in December, becoming the first of her kind to serve within the federal court system in Adelaide.

Bonnie’s role is vital for the emotional well-being of the court’s most vulnerable participants. She is tasked with supporting children who must provide testimony or act as witnesses in family law proceedings. By offering a calming presence, Bonnie helps mitigate the trauma and stress often associated with legal disputes.

With her gentle temperament and rigorous training, Bonnie is already making a difference for both the legal staff and the families involved. Her historic appointment marks a significant step forward in making the justice system more empathetic and child-friendly.
