The Surprising European Roots of Mexican Beer

Mexico is currently the world’s leading beer exporter, but its “love affair” with the beverage blossomed only in the last century. Displaced European brewers, fleeing industrialization in Germany, brought their expertise to Mexico, transforming local tastes from traditional pulque to crisp lagers and ales.

The most iconic seasonal brew, Noche Buena, was created in 1924 by German master brewer Otto Neumaier in Veracruz. Originally a private Christmas reserve, this rich Bock beer became a public sensation in 1938. This shift was fueled by rising incomes and marketing campaigns that framed beer as a “healthy” alternative to hard liquor. Today, Noche Buena remains a beloved holiday staple, symbolizing how European traditions merged with Mexican culture to create a global powerhouse.
