The Naughty Boy Pelican – Coastal Town’s Newest and Boldest Star
Three-year-old Pelican Naughty Boy Draws Crowds with Strange Behaviour and Seagull Snatching.
The coastal tourist town of Kalbarri, located on Western Australia’s Midwest coast, is experiencing a surge in visitors thanks to the notorious antics of a young pelican named Naughty Boy. The three-year-old bird is the newest and youngest member of the town’s resident scoop of pelicans, which are fed daily by volunteers in a tradition spanning nearly 50 years.
Unprecedented Behaviour and the Seagull Incident
Volunteer pelican feeders confirm that Naughty Boy’s strange behaviours and unique personality are unlike anything they have ever witnessed. According to feeder Jude Anderson, the bird is “very naughty, he’s very young, and he’s just got a male attitude”.
Naughty Boy is known for his aggressive style, often grunting at feeders, demanding the fish, running around vocally, and lunging at terrified toddlers. His notoriety spiked about a year ago when a tour guide captured a video of him holding an entire seagull inside his fleshy bill. The seagull was competing for fish and had to be rescued by a volunteer.
“Had she not done that, he [the seagull] was going to be dinner,” Ms. Anderson stated. She clarified that while the seagull-snapping is entertaining for the audience, “It’s not our intention that he eats the birds”.
Playing Dead and Drawing a Global Crowd
The theatrical pelican has another favourite move: “playing dead.” During feeding sessions, Naughty Boy may be captured splaying out on the ground or tucking his head beneath his wings, pretending to ignore the activity.
Ms. Anderson confirmed that Naughty Boy has become a major drawcard, significantly increasing visitor numbers at the educational feeding sessions, which attract people from “all around the world”. Despite his snapping, volunteers confirm that the pelican’s beak is gentle and does not cause harm.
The amount of fish provided during the sessions is noted to be only a small portion of the pelicans’ daily caloric intake, ensuring they continue to hunt naturally. However, pelicans are known to be nomadic, and the volunteers anticipate that Naughty Boy may soon move on to a new location.
