The Clock is Ticking: Mandatory UK ETA Starts February 2026 – Are You Ready?
The UK is officially ending the grace period for its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, making it mandatory for visitors from 85 visa-exempt countries starting February 25, 2026. This digital travel permission, which costs £16 and is applied for via an official app, is a crucial step towards a fully digitised and contactless UK border.
Carriers will strictly check for the ETA before boarding, meaning travellers without advance digital clearance will be denied travel. While it enhances border security, the ETA is also designed to provide a smoother, more seamless experience for millions of tourists.

Major Change Ahead for Non-Visa Visitors
A significant shift in UK travel policy is just around the corner, marking a major milestone in the country’s move towards a fully digitised border system. If you’re planning a trip to the United Kingdom, it’s time to pay close attention: from February 25, 2026, visitors from 85 nationalities will not be able to legally travel to the UK without an advance Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This new enforcement date officially ends the grace period for travellers and makes the ETA a mandatory requirement for millions of people globally who currently enjoy visa-free entry, including citizens of the United States, Canada, France, and many other nations.
What is the ETA and Why is it Being Enforced Now?
The ETA is a digital permission required for non-visa nationals to travel to the UK. It is comparable to schemes already in place in other major destinations, such as the ESTA in the US and the eTA in Canada.
While the scheme was launched back in October 2023, it was not strictly enforced initially. According to the Home Office and Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp MP, this deliberate ‘soft’ rollout was intended to give travellers ample time to adjust to the new requirement—a common approach for new travel schemes worldwide.
The upcoming enforcement is described by the government as a crucial step towards creating a contactless UK border and a fully digitised immigration system.
The Dual Benefits: Security and Seamless Travel
Minister Mike Tapp highlighted the dual purpose of the mandatory ETA: enhanced security and improved traveller experience.
“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and gives us a fuller picture of immigration. ETAs are also better for travellers. Digitising the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the UK every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience.”
Since its launch, the government reports that over 13.3 million visitors have successfully applied for and used an ETA, benefiting from faster and smoother travel. The ETA is fundamental, even for visitors who are just transiting and going through UK passport control for a connecting flight.
The key takeaway for carriers is that they will be strictly checking for digital permission (either an ETA or an eVisa) before boarding, meaning no permission equals no boarding.

Crucial Advice for Dual Citizens
There is a specific, urgent warning for dual citizens:
British and Irish citizens are exempt from needing an ETA. However, dual British citizens must ensure they have a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement for their journey.
The government strongly advises that without these documents, dual citizens risk being denied boarding when travelling to the UK from February 25, 2026. Don’t risk your trip – check your documents now!

The system helps predict travel flows. While securing the border, these digital authorisations also give governments a much clearer, real-time picture of who is planning to enter the country, allowing for better management of immigration resources and preparation for large influxes of visitors.
