Global Woe: Sandcastles and Loud Shoes Banned in Popular Italian Holiday Spots!
Several popular Italian regions are introducing stringent rules to combat over-tourism, which could significantly impact the holiday experience for many international visitors. These new regulations are quite drastic and threaten tourists with hefty fines and even jail time.
Italy’s Tourism Minister, Daniela Santanché, stated that while Italy loves tourists, it expects “attentiveness”. It is now highly recommended for everyone to check local prohibitions before travelling.
In Sardinia, coastal protection is paramount: building sandcastles, digging holes, and taking home shells or sand as souvenirs are all strictly forbidden. Furthermore, sunbathing on the sand is only permitted without a towel, as the textile is believed to damage the beach’s structure. Violations can incur fines up to $3000$ euros (over $3,200 USD).
On the island of Capri, wearing footwear that clatters loudly on the cobblestones is banned in the old town, as it disturbs the locals’ peace.
In Liguria, wearing flip-flops on hiking trails is prohibited for safety reasons, with violators facing a fine of nearly $2500$ euros.
In Rome, sitting on the historic Spanish Steps is forbidden, even for a short rest. Dragging suitcases or strollers up the stairs is also banned, with a penalty of $400$ euros.
The penalties for breaking these rules can be severe: up to $7000$ euros (around $7,500 USD) or six months in prison, especially for purchasing counterfeit brand-name goods. Tourists are strongly advised to familiarise themselves with local decrees before arrival.
