Unusual Request: Danish Zoo Asks Public to Donate Unwanted Pets for Predators
In a unique initiative to ensure a natural diet for its predators, a Danish zoo has put out a public appeal for pet donations. The Aalborg Zoo is asking residents to donate healthy but unwanted pets like chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
The zoo explains that its responsibility is to “imitate the natural food chain,” and that these smaller animals are “an important part of the predators’ diet,” especially for the Eurasian lynx. By doing this, the zoo aims to provide a diet that closely resembles what the animals would hunt in the wild.
The donated animals will be euthanised by trained zoo staff. In addition to smaller pets, the zoo is also accepting horses, provided they have a valid passport and have not received medical treatment for a recent illness. Owners who donate horses may also be eligible for a tax deduction.
The zoo welcomes the donation of pets on weekdays, without the need for a prior appointment.
